The sentencing was the final chapter of a nearly four year long battle for justice. As this battle has come to an end and the four year anniversary of my father’s death nears (29 July), I would like to appeal to you to make a final, but lasting, commitment in his memory.

My father was senselessly murdered at the age of 48 and I want to challenge you to donate the age that you believe my father should have become to Marang House on a monthly basis. To start off I commit to donating the symbolic amount of 101 rand per month to Marang House. I believe that most people aim to pass the one century mark and as my father always went the extra mile, I added one more year.

Many charities like Marang House are struggling as a result of the economic crisis that the world is currently facing. Marang House therefore needs your ongoing support now more than ever to survive these challenging times. Your commitment will provide Marang House with a constant and lasting income, which will not only allow us to continue taking care of the eleven seriously ill children living with us, but it most of all will keep my father’s legacy alive.

How to participate:

1. Print the Debit Order Authorisation Form (debitorder.pdf).
2. Decide on how old you feel Dr Pieter Ernst should have become or come up with another symbolic amount in his memory.
3. Complete the form and don’t forget to sign it.
4. Fax the form to Marang House – 011 476 2875.
5. Should you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time. For more information on debit orders, please refer to the FAQ.

If you wish, you can leave an explanation of your symbolic amount below in the comments.

Yours Sincerely,

Pieter Ernst Jr

Both accused have been found guilty and were sentenced to 22 years imprisonment today by the Johannesburg High Court on counts of murder, armed robbery and the possession of a firearm.

Dr Ernst was a much respected medical doctor and founder of Marang House. The 48-year-old doctor was gunned-down on a Friday afternoon just outside of his farm near Magaliesburg, when he was on his way to pay his workers. His murder caused a wave of shock and anger in the community he served.

Pieter Ernst Jr: “I am very thankful for the continued interest in the trial, but am nonetheless glad that it’s over. I want to commend the Johannesburg High Court and state advocate for their work as it was not an easy trial.”

In 1998 Dr Ernst established the non-profit organisation ‘Marang House’. After immigrating from the Netherlands Dr Ernst worked for several years in South Africa’s public hospitals. There he realized that many seriously ill children were literally living in hospitals, which was not the ideal environment for their recovery. He purchased the property behind his surgery to provide a home to these children. The organisation has since cared for more than seventy children suffering from diseases ranging from chronic renal failure to diabetes.

In our continued efforts to find new ways for you to support Marang House, we are pleased to announce that you are now able to support Marang House with a monthly debit order. Donating by debit order is one of the easiest and most effective ways of donating money to Marang House for individuals and small businesses.

Debit Orders allow Marang House to have a constant and stable income and is therefore an important element of our fundraising strategy to ensure the long-term sustainability of the organisation.

By starting today with donating a minimum of R100 per month, you can help sustain the important work of Marang House. Setting up a debit order is as easy as completing an Authorisation Form (PDF). You can phone Marang House on 011 476 6698 if you need any assistance. Debit orders can be cancelled again at any time.

For more detailed information, see below by clicking on more.

Debit Orders FAQ

What is a debit order? A debit order is an agreement between you and Marang House, where Marang House will debit your bank account or credit card with an agreed amount on a monthly basis.

How do I create a debit order? You have to complete a debit order authorisation form or you can phone Marang House (011 476 6698) to assist you.

Why is it important for Marang House to receive debit orders? Marang House relies entirely on donations and sponsorships. Most of our corporate donors unfortunately only donate on an ad hoc basis. Debit Orders allow Marang House to have a constant and stable income and is therefore an important element of our fundraising strategy to ensure the long-term sustainability of the organisation.

What is the minimum amount of debit order? R100,- per month.

What credit cards and which banks can you debit from? We accept any Mastercard or Visa credit cards and can debit any savings or current account at a South African bank.

Can I receive a Section 18A certificate for donations made by debit order? Yes, Marang House can issue you with a Section 18A Certificate. We will add all your monthly donations from the past year together and issue you with one certificate that you can use for tax purposes. You can request a certificate by contacting Marang House.

Can I cancel a debit order? Yes. You can contact Marang House to cancel your debit order at any time. It might take several days to take your details of the system and also be aware that we submit debit orders in advance to be processed and can therefore not make any changes at the last minute. We however will process your cancellation as soon as this is possible and with a maximum of 30 days, which is the legal notice period as stipulated in the authorisation form.

Who processes the debit orders? The agent of Marang House is Netcash. The debit orders will be processed by them with Bankserv on our behalf. For more information you can visit their website http://www.netcash.co.za.

What are the fees? This depends on a lot of factors. We can give you an indication on the fees involved on request. Debit orders on bank bccounts are generally cheaper, especially on larger amounts, as the fees are fixed. There is however a small fee for both Marang House and the account holder. With credit cards the account holder generally does not pay any fee, but Marang House pays a small percentage of the amount as a fee.

Are my credit card details safe? We have taken all the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of your details, including your credit card details. The authorisation forms are safely stored away and will only be accessed should your bank question the debit order. The forms are not stored digitally and will never be shared with anyone else except for your bank and our agent, Netcash, on request. Once you cancel your debit order, all your information will be destroyed and deleted and you have to complete the entire authorisation form again to reinstate your debit order.

Your details will be entered into the Netcash system, which has very advanced security measures in place. More detailed information on this can be found on: https://www.netcash.co.za/FrontEnd/features/Technical_Features.asp#DataSecurity

Strini Pillai, South Africa’s Singing Chef enjoyed the first ‘Marang House Seafood Platter’ at Alex Del Mar this afternoon. The popular Northcliff restaurant added the seafood platter to its already extensive menu to raise funds for the seriously ill children of Marang House.

Alex Del Mar owner Alex Sourmenidis explains “We have created an exclusive platter of which the proceeds will be donated to Marang House. We will also make our patrons aware of this opportunity, thereby creating awareness for the wonderful work that Marang House does for the community”

Alex also experienced what it’s like to suffer from kidney problems and continues: “I wanted to give something back to the community and when I found out that Marang House is not only around the corner, but also cares for children suffering from kidney diseases, the decision to become actively involved was quickly made”

Pieter Ernst Jr, Executive Director of Marang House: “This is quite an exciting campaign as it allows the community surrounding Marang House to support us in yet another way. Marang House relies heavily on the support of the community and we are very thankful that Alex Del Mar has come up with this campaign”

Pieter continues “Strini Pillai has been involved with Marang House for a while, for which we are very grateful, and since he presents a cooking show, he was the obvious choice to have the honour of enjoying the first ever Marang House Seafood Platter”.

The “Marang House Seafood Platter” is exclusively available at Alex Del Mar from 28 April 2009 until the end of May 2009. The platter, which includes prawns, mussels, hake, calamari, chips and rice, will cost R89,-. For reservations or directions, please phone 011 6784790.

Marang House was founded in 1998 by the late Dr Pieter Ernst to provide a stable home-environment to children who were otherwise forced to stay in hospitals for extended periods.
Pieter Ernst Jr, Executive Director of Marang House and son of the late founder: “We were really happy to have the opportunity to celebrate our ten year anniversary together with the local community. Our annual Christmas Market has become a well-known event amongst our neighbours, who have supported us throughout the years.”

He adds “The local community surrounding Marang House has played a significant role in operating and sustaining Marang House in the past ten years, for which we are very grateful. Without their support, we would have not made our ten year anniversary.”
